Occaisionally, we find time to treat the kids to a day out. During July all the boys donned their whites and went out to a Mae On school where a Saturday morning hardball net is held. After helping out with the coaching duties with the local children, they explored the Muang On caves in a mountain opposite the school and climbed the seven hundred steps to the temple on its peak. Later in the afternoon they went to the hotsprings a few kms up the road, cooking eggs in the boiling waters close to the geysers, and then bathed in the mineral swimming pool for an hour or two.
In August the boys were taken out for the evening for ‘Mugataa’. This is a traditional Thai BBQ, very cheap and the buffet style meant they could eat as much as they liked. The boys have appetites that would put the largest of our Sixes players to shame. Mugataas in Chiang Mai can seat hundred's of people and the kids had a fantastic evening. Aalong, with his usual confidence was happy to leap up on stage and perform karaoke, while the others sat back and stuffed themselves to bursting.
The boys also have an insatiable appetite for watching cricket DVDs, so if you’re heading to Chiang Mai next year bring along any of your old cricket DVDs. We take it for granted watching the game on TV from an early age, but that experience isn’t possible here. For them to see the great players and teams perform is a real education, we all love to copy our idols and study their technique, and it’s no different for them.
