Newsletter June 2010

TO ALL OUR SPONSORS:
In early May 2010, the Hill tribe cricket sponsorship program got underway thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts from teams and individuals at the San Miguel Chiang Mai International Sixes. Initially, 12 boys were selected to join the program who had come from another Hill tribe hostel school where the conditions meant that many boys left education early to a very uncertain future. Five of the boys had already left the previous school, one boy called SEE who was expelled for leaving the premises was living on the streets earning just 50 dollars a month working in a noodle bar at the age of 13. It was demoralising losing so many great young cricketers and seeing their miserable surroundings, so it was decided to establish the sponsorship program to enable children to complete their education, live in clean, safe and acceptable conditions and of course continue to develop their cricket skills. The first 12 kids are JUN, MIKE, BONCHOOAI, AALONG, BOGACHAI, CHOO, CHANCHAI, SEE, PIWAN, PONG, NIKOM and little CHAIWUT..

So a new hostel was found called Ban Pak Chow Kow right next to Gymkhana Club and the boys were found a new school to attend called Buak- crognoi where cricket is already established with CMSCA. The Christian hostel has been running for 35 years and now has about 100 kids boarding there (most Hilltribes are in fact Christian). Volunteers from the CMSCA have worked hard to move the boys to the new school with all their requirements such as uniforms, travel and food attended to. The boys have settled in very well at the hostel and the school, and began cricket training in earnest from day one, in preparation for a play-off U-16 final on 19th June, as they finished equal first in last season’s junior league. The Chiang Mai Cricket Club whose senior league has always made cricket free for juniors, staged five weekends of 20/20 matches, enabling the them to get some invaluable experience in the middle.

The program has got off to a great start and the sponsors who have shown faith in these children, who otherwise become a forgotten third class in Thai society, have given them hope and joy. And that’s the difference since May this year, the kids now are happy, compared to the glum and downcast faces of a few months ago. It makes it all worthwhile seeing that transformation in children, something simple but something beautiful. They know someone believes in them, that they have talent and worth. Now the kids sing together walking back from Gymkhana after nets back to the hostel. Their dedication to training is amazing  and many will represent Thailand in the near future, that’s how good this bunch are!
We are hoping to bring some more boys and girls to join the hostel from October in the new school term, all promising cricketers, able to take this journey because of you. All sponsors will soon receive an individual newsletter and a chance to follow the progress of one of the kids.

We would like to Thank you, our sponsors for making this possible for these children.
