Cricket at the Makhamwan Games 2010.
Thailand’s annual National Youth Games, the Makhamwan Games started as a national event in 1985 in Nakhon Ratchasima and moves around the country to a different province every year. This year it was the turn of Phetchabun (North-Central Thailand) from the 19th to the 25th of March, 2010.
The difference this year was the inclusion of cricket as a sporting discipline, although only classed as a demonstration sport this year, a total of 12 teams (6 men's & 6 women's) took part, although an incredible 20 teams had applied to take part in the event, however the number was limited to 12 by the Sports Authority of Thailand, a real sign of the growth of the game in Thailand.
This was a historic occasion, the very first official Thai cricket competition sanctioned by the Sports Authority of Thailand, and it was a great success for cricket but an even better one for Chiang Mai u-19 Boys, they took away the title of being the first winner in the event in an exciting final with Khon Kaen. It's now official Chiang Mai are the U-19 cricket champions of Thailand! |
