Somewhat belatedly, Gymkhana Juniors u-16 captain Sufyaan received the CMSCA League Championship trophy for the 2010/2011 season, The home of junior cricket in Thailand. The reason behind the delayed award is that Sufi has been to India for two months, training every day at a leading cricket academy in New Delhi. His experience has developed his game immensely, and at just 12 years of age he is showing the potential to go very far in cricket. He is coached most days by his father Wani, who plays for Chiang Mai Cricket Club and in the chiangmai sixes, and Sufi’s dedication and passion for cricket is matched by Wani’s support and encouragement. The Gymkhana Juniors team came back from a disappointing start to last season’s campaign. After loosing their opening 2 fixtures they went on to record 4 straight wins to secure the championship. Gym juniors is a mixed team comprised of a number of schools across Chiang Mai and so a total of 28 players turned out for the team throughout the season, making the success all the more remarkable.
The U-16 wicket keeper Max Coombes has also improved greatly after spending his holidays in England practising daily with his cousins. Max’s batting has gone to a new level. He shares his father Chris’ ability ( who also plays for CMCC) in having a great eye for the ball. Max and Sufi train regularly at Gymkhana practise nets, and their rapid progress will see both players featuring in the chiang mai U-19 league next season as well as defending the U-16 title.
