BANGKOK v CHIANG MAI GIRLS @ TCG 08/01/2011 (FINAL)
CHIANG MAI GIRLS BECOME NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Chiang Mai girls U-19 side faced last years winners Bangkok in the final of the National Youth Cricket Championships at the Thailand Cricket Ground in Bangkok. Captain Parn won the toss and invited the opposition to bat. Finally, the fielding team’s star bowlers came good in the tournament, and Som and Parn took vital early wickets, leaving Bangkok an uphill task of posting a challenging score. The captain’s quick bowling was too much for the Bangkok top order and she bowled out 3 batters in her 3 overs. The other bowlers kept things tight and the batting side could only limp to a meager 47 runs by the end of the 15th over.
Chiang Mai lost their opener Anna without scoring and Parn soon followed. Chasing a low total suddenly became a real test of the remaining inexperienced batters, but Som and Urn were steadfast, running well between the wickets and scoring off any lose balls. Chiang Mai girls eventually passed the finish line with overs to spare, recording a surprisingly easy victory over their rivals. Overall the team played very well although never really pushed, but we think this team has a great future in Thailand cricket for some years to come. The U-19 Chiang Mai boys team won the final in the next match completing a fantastic double for the squads. With a strong fielding team, Chiang Mai girls were always confident of making a respectable showing, but to win the tournament so convincingly has given all the players the belief that they can go on to greater achievements. With time to improve their game, especially in the batting, the girls will be looking to widen the gap between themselves and the other province teams still further before heading off to the National Youth Games in Uttaradit in March 2011, hopefully to bring back the trophy to the North.
